Carburizing heat treatment

Carburizing is a process in which steel surface absorbs carbon and the surface hardens with quenching. It is mainly used for the parts made by cheap and workable materials (lacking necessary elements for quenching) to improve their wear resistance, durability and toughness. Being cheaper than other methods, it is often used for parts that require a low production cost, such as automobile parts and gears.
Only carbon is absorbed in carburizing, while carbon and nitrogen are absorbed in carbonitriding.
Carbonitriding uses lower treatment temperature than carburizing. As a result, it tends to have a smaller distortion and dimensional change, and thus is used mainly for parts that require higher accuracy.

Characteristics of carburizing

It greatly improves wear resistance, durability and toughness.
Partial quenching is possible.
× In the treatment of a large piece, the piece will be exposed to the atmosphere at quenching after carburizing, thus leaving oxidized scales on its surface.
× It takes time to create a thicker carburized layer.

Characteristics of our company

We have both traditional liquid carburizing equipment and more common gas carburizing equipment. We use diverse equipment to match the material and the use to treat products in the optimized condition.
Liquid carburizing requires a short time to carburize steel. So, it contributes to shorter delivery time of single item orders. It also has strong carburizing power over low carbon steel, like rolled steel for general structure.
Gas carburizing can treat large parts using a vertical pit furnace.
For quenching of long pieces, we use salt bath quenching, which leaves smaller distortion than conventional oil quenching.
It is considered to reduce the distortion to a half or a third of what oil quenching would.
